Hurricane Season on the Grand Strand: A Vacation Renter’s Storm Plan
Dear Sir or Madam,
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which covers most of the Grand Strand’s busiest rental months. Most weeks pass with nothing more than a passing thunderstorm, but a storm in the forecast can turn a vacation into a scramble. Five minutes of planning before you arrive makes the difference.
Step 1: Know your zone before you unpack
Horry County uses three hurricane evacuation zones, A, B and C. They’re based on storm surge risk, not the storm’s category:
- Zone A: the most coastal areas, including most oceanfront rentals. Usually the first to be told to leave.
- Zone B: extends inland from Highway 17.
- Zone C: areas between Highways 701 and 544.
Look up your rental’s address on the county’s Know Your Zone map, or statewide at SCEMD Know Your Zone. Evacuation orders are issued by zone, so this one letter tells you whether an order applies to you. The county also advises that people in flood-prone areas along waterways, and anyone in a mobile home, should consider leaving even if their zone isn’t called.
Step 2: Read your rental agreement’s storm clause
This is where most vacation renters get surprised. Policies vary widely. Some owners and managers refund unused nights when a mandatory evacuation is ordered, some offer credit, and some offer nothing. Before you book, ask:
- What happens to my payment if a mandatory evacuation covers this property?
- Does a voluntary evacuation or a tropical storm warning count?
- Is travel insurance with hurricane coverage recommended or required? (It typically must be bought before a storm is named.)
Step 3: Your storm-ready checklist
If a storm is coming
- Follow official orders, not social media. Evacuation orders come from the Governor and local emergency management.
- Leave early. Traffic out of the Grand Strand builds fast once an order is issued.
- Tell your property manager when you leave, and photograph the rental’s condition as you go.
- Don’t come back until officials say it’s safe. Flooding and debris can last days after a storm passes.
