Grand Strand Season, Ep. 5: The Owner’s Storm Checklist for the Last Weeks of Hurricane Season
Dear Sir or Madam,
GRAND STRAND SEASON · Episode 5 · Property owners
We already covered the renter’s side in A Vacation Renter’s Storm Plan. This one is for owners.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30. NOAA’s 2026 outlook leaned below normal, with a 55% chance of a below-normal season (NOAA via Ocean News, May 2026). A quiet forecast still isn’t a promise. In 2025, Hurricane Imelda stayed offshore in early October (Visit Myrtle Beach).
The checklist
- Know your zone. Look up your property’s evacuation zone at hurricane.sc / Know Your Zone and put it in your guest guide.
- Put alerts in front of guests. Add links to the SC Emergency Manager app, SCDOT 511 (evacuation routes) and Myrtle Beach’s MB Alerts text and email service to your welcome message.
- Check flood coverage now. Most homeowners’ policies don’t cover flood, and NFIP flood insurance usually takes 30 days to take effect (FEMA). You can’t buy it when a storm is already on the map.
- Keep papers ready. Insurance, deed, license and photos of the property’s condition, in a go-bag and in the cloud.
- Write a cancellation and refund policy for mandatory evacuations, and say it plainly in your listing.
- Plan for pets. If you’re pet-friendly, tell guests where pet-friendly shelters and hotels are.
- Generator safety. Keep generators at least 20 feet from buildings (Horry County Emergency Management).
